Winter Tyres

Winter tyres are designed to provide maximum safety in the colder months of the year when temperatures often drop below 7˚C.  They offer better grip by remaining softer than normal or summer tyres when cold.  This better grip also means better handling and braking.  When rubber gets hard it can actually float on ice and water making your car hard to control and can lead to skidding and aquaplaning.

Winter tyres should be changed in matching sets and all 4 should be of the same type and manufacturer.  Different tyre manufacturers will use different formulations and mismatching can cause a braking imbalance and lead to instability when driving.

Winter tyres are generally available from October and should be changed back to Summer tyres around March.

If you are keeping you Summer tyres for refitting they should be stored off the ground.  If left on wheels they should be inflated and stacked on top of each other.  If not fitted then they should be stored upright.
